Hundreds Gather for the Snail Racing Championship in Frankfurt

In Frankfurt, hundreds of people gathered to participate in the third annual Snail World Championship at the old airfield in Bonames. The excitement was palpable as snails prepared to race across a damp, painted cloth.

A Unique Competition

The event saw children and adults alike training their snails on agility courses. Five-year-old Luise brought her snail, Carrera Caro, who skillfully navigated a seesaw. Other snails, like Flitzefritz and Speedy Baldo, were more relaxed, preferring to rest rather than train. Luise proudly shared that they had practiced a lot at home, ensuring Carrera Caro was ready for the big race.

High Turnout and Enthusiasm

Thorsten Dehoust from the Green Belt Nature Guides expressed surprise at the high turnout. Although only 80 people registered online, the event attracted hundreds. Participants and spectators eagerly watched as snails raced 33.2 centimeters across the cloth. Dehoust humorously noted the lack of doping controls, joking that they do inspect the snails.

Tales of Snail Owners

Christian, who attended with his five-year-old son Noah, shared that their snail, Larry the Roadrunner, had enjoyed a hearty meal of oatmeal. Irina Tiefenbach traveled an hour with her sons Jonathan and Julian and their snails, eager to join the fun. Meanwhile, Jacqueline and her husband brought Rosie, a plush snail, and reminisced about their wedding where Rosie had worn a floral crown. Jacqueline even sported a snail tattoo, showcasing her dedication to the quirky event.

The Exciting Race

Over 180 snails participated, each bearing a number on their shell. With the crowd cheering, the snails were placed in the center circle, and the countdown began. As the race commenced, some snails surged ahead while others took their time. The crowd encouraged their favorites, creating a lively atmosphere. Ultimately, the first snail to cross the finish line with its tentacles was declared the winner amid applause and excitement.

The Frankfurt Snail World Championship brought together a diverse crowd, all united by their love for this unusual sport. The event highlighted the joy and community spirit that can be found in the simplest of activities. As the day ended, winners were celebrated on makeshift podiums, and everyone left with memories of a fun-filled day.
